Beginner Informartion

The TBTSTN does not require ski experience or racing goals. However, these are the basis for our training methods. Some things to consider are...

Technical elements

Nordic skiing is a heavily technical sport. There is a large learning curve between stepping on skis for the first time and incorporating speed / distance workouts into your activities. If you are new to skiing, consider joining our beginner program as you gain confidence.

Trail passes and locations

The two main nordic skiing venues in Thunder Bay are the Lappe Nordic Centre and the Kamview Nordic Centre. Both locations require trail passes, either daily or seasonal.

Our colours and mascot

Blue, Hot Pink, Yellow, Black, White.

Our club colours represent who we are. Blue and yellow singify our commitment to the Lakehead University community. Hot pink is a symbol of our boldness, dedication to sport, and love of fun. Black and white are aesthetic supporting colours on club associated items and callouts, they also represent the snowy winter landscape of Thunder Bay.

Wolfie and the Thunder Bay Thrasher

The current mascots for the TBTSTN are Wolfie and the Thrasher. Wolfie is Lakehead University's mascot, so we hold him close. The North-American Brown Thrasher has the most recorded song types (estimated up to 3000 types), of any songbird in all of North America. It is also known for its aggressive foraging method, "thrashing", hence its name. The Thrasher represents our competitive nature, impressive skill, incessant creativity, and drive to succeed.

Welcome

Accessibility

Accessibility and Injury sessions

The current training model offers weekly accessible sessions on Sunday afternoons. Although, these sessions may be organized upon demand. These could look like....

- Low impact activities for injury (cycling, swimming, yoga...)

- Recovery focus (physio focused sessions)

- Accessible terrain for adapted training modes

We are open to your ideas to make TBTSTN as accessible as possible!

Attendance and communication

There are no attendance requirements to join the TBTSTN. However, if you plan to attend a group session, the general expectation is that your attendance is confirmed beforehand via our communication channels.

A minimum of two (2) athletes must be present to run a session.

Group transportation is common practice.

Coaching

The TBTSTN is exclusively run on peer coaching. This means that our club does not have a head coach or associate coach. That being said, it is common practice for nordic ski racers to obtain some coaching qualifications; meaning, other participating athletes are excellent resources for sharing expertise.

Technique sessions are typically threaded through easy moving workouts.
